Fox Class Activities Year 1

These activities are intended to be used over the next few weeks if the school is closed or if you start self-isolation.  We will be in touch with additional activities if schools remain closed.

Literacy

  • Try and write at least a paragraph each school day. This could be in the form of a diary, a short story, a poem, a set of instructions, a description of a pet, a letter, a book review etc.  Please make sure you use the book provided and a sharp pencil.  Encourage your child to use neat handwriting, with tall letters and tails in the correct places.  Year 1s should all be using capital letters and full stops/question marks.  Say each sentence out loud to make sure that there is a full stop when their voice stops!  They need to think really carefully about their spelling, making sure that common exception words/high frequency words (that we have covered in spellings) are spelt correctly and not ‘sounded out’.  Other irregular words can be ‘sounded out’.
  • Aim to complete a few pages of the CGP Phonics book each day.
  • Go through the sound cards regularly (at least twice a week). Some children also have word cards. Practise blending ‘nonsense words’ in preparation for the Phonics screening test. There are many examples on the web, here is one link:

https://www.twinkl.co.uk/resource/t-l-2191-ks1-alien-nonsense-sorting-word-cards

  • Go over all old spellings in the spelling book which include the Year 1 common exception words (front of purple diary)
  • Read a school or home book for 10 minutes each school day.
  • Read a story to your child and ask them questions about what they have heard. Ask how and why questions about the characters. Can they predict the ending? Can they think of an alternative ending? Get them to retell the story in their own words.

  • Count in 2s to 20, 10s to 100 and 5s to 50.
  • Learn to tell the time on an analogue clock (start with o’clock and half past, then quarter to and quarter past and then the 5 minute intervals. For the ‘minutes to’ eg 25 minutes to 8, count from the top, anticlockwise, in 5s)
  • Adding and subtracting to 100 eg 25 – 7 (put first number in head and then count back using fingers).
  • Practise number bonds to 10 and then 20.
  • Recognise numbers to 100
  • Find one more and one less than numbers to 100.
  • Make sure your child knows the days of the week and months of the year in order and can answer questions like ‘which day comes before Wednesday?’.

Science

  • Topic of plants If we are not back at the start of the summer term our topic in Science would be plants.  Try and find out information about some of the following areas and produce a leaflet/booklet/poster/information sheet:

Name the petals, stem, leaf and root of a plant (diagram)

Name the roots, trunk, branches and leaves of a tree

Name a variety of common wild and garden plants

Describe how seeds and bulbs grow into plants

Describe what plants need in order to grow and stay healthy (water, light and suitable temperature)

Perhaps you could grow your own plants and keep a diary?

Twinkl https://www.twinkl.co.uk/ is giving adults free access to its resources for a month. The site if full of activities and games for all subjects.

Remember to do lots of creative and physical activities too!  Art, playdough, colouring, model making, sewing etc are all very important.  Apart from getting outside as much as possible there are lots of websites that will also keep your active little ones busy!  We use https://www.jumpstartjonny.co.uk/home and https://www.cosmickids.com/ at school.

Fox Class Activities Year 2

These activities are intended to be used over the next few weeks if the school is closed or if you start self-isolation.  We will be in touch with additional activities if schools remain closed.

I am planning to give regular updates on which sections of each CGP SATs Buster book your child should be working on, however if this becomes impossible for some reason, then please try and do a section of each book every school day.  In addition to this, there are some suggestions of other activities below:

Literacy

  • Try and write at least a paragraph each school day. This could be in the form of a diary, a short story, a poem, a set of instructions, a description of a pet, a letter, a book review etc.  Please make sure you use the book provided and a sharp pencil.  Encourage your child to use joined handwriting, with tall letters and tails in the correct places.  Try and make sure that each sentence is a ‘clever sentence’ including a good range of punctuation and grammar.    They need to think really carefully about their spelling, making sure that common exception words/high frequency words (that we have covered in spellings) are spelt correctly and not ‘sounded out’.
  • Continue to practise common exception word spellings and high frequency words that we have been doing over the past few weeks on the spelling sheets.
  • Read a school or home book for 10 minutes each school day.
  • Read to your child and ask them questions about what they have heard.
  • Keep practising the grammar terms.
